The immigration debate is focused on flash point topics like driver's licenses for illegal immigrants, hiring halls and border fences. But all the rhetoric and punditry obscures a crisis among immigrants themselves: the growing unmet demand for English-language instruction. This is a crucial problem, because the more fluent immigrants are in English, the more they can contribute positively to society. This is a point that all sides of the immigration debate agree on. Making this improvement in the lives of millions of people living and working here has got to be as vital as deciding whether to punish them for how they arrived.

It really worries me a lot. Newsday doesn't know the difference between illegal aliens and Immigrants. It also worries me that Newsday doesn't understand that by Immigration Law, IMMIGRANTS have a working knowledge of English when they arrived.
Is anyone else beginning to think the large magzines and publications have some sort of very serious economic stake in forcing the illegal aliens down our throats?

The vast majority of real immigrants to this nation have already studied English for years. Only the recipients of the idiotic visa lottery and the Cubans who enter with our 'other' really stupid policy arrive here speaking only Swahili.
No more studies and articles on "immigration" until think tanks and the media understand the difference between legal and illegal.

I'm confused (Again) Didn't just a few articales ago we heard them scream discrimination and racism when they were asked to order their sandwich in English?
I used to work in a very popular Restaurant in SJ Ca. right across the street from the federal courthouse where every quarter they would have their little ceremony and get their green cards.
Even 15 years ago I couldn't understand how they could be "Citizens" but they did not even know enough simple "Ingeesh" to order a burger at lunch.
This is the new "Don't ask Don't tell" policy?
They want us to pay our hardearned tax dollars for their "Ingleesh" classes but we are not supposed to ask them to use the language?
I won't ask you to speak English you won't tell me I am a racist because I asked you to?

Illegal invaders don't care to learn English, and only consider themselves thriving when they are working the system and living off their anchors' entitlements. They are truly detrimental to this country...how many more will we be forced to subsidize? What happens when the coffers go dry, and they will go dry at the current rate of illegals' irresponsible procreation of ingrate anchors?

Why should the tax payer have to foot the bill for people who are not suppose to be here in the first place. Want foreign labor. Let the business that use them foot the bill and they need to come in the right way. I will try not to use those business myself, we have citizens that need work and a earned pay check. Dumb just dumb. Stop welfare and have a work program. Use prison labor.
